Question on the 1992 "Little Mermaid"

Date: Oct 18, 2007 23:00

How closely does it stick to the real story?

The IMDb was no help - and neither was Amazon, really. All I can
gather is that the witch is called Cassandra and the mermaid's animal
friends are named Binks, Cecil and Claudia (the last two are birds).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/6303471757/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_helpful/103...#customerReviews

I'm not sure that it's the Goodtimes video directed by Masakazu
Higuchi & Chinami Namba, but that's the cover presented at Amazon. (In
the IMDb, they juxtaposed THAT cover with the credits for the Richard
Chamberlain 1975 version - the latter has FAR better animation,
judging from the look of the former!)

So, does anyone know if it has the original ending?

Lenona.

You can find the original story here:
http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/littlemermaid/index.html

Most versions vary somewhat, especially the ending. Disney's version is
completely altered, with only some of the elements remaining.

BTW, the Richard Chamberlain/Reader's Digest half-hour version does
have it, as does the mid-1970s Japanese version, which is over an hour
and is a real tearjerker.

Well, yes, I'm aware of that.

I was grown up by the time the Disney version came out, so I'd read
all of Andersen's tales several times over. I must say I was shocked
to find, in the IMDb, a customer review of a German 1955 live-action
version of "Snow White," (it includes the poisoned comb as well as the
apple) in which the viewer admitted to never reading the original
Grimm version!

I also saw the half-hour Richard Chamberlain/Reader's Digest version
of LM (which has the original ending) on TV in the 1970s. Later, maybe
in the 1980s or 1990s, I saw the 1970s anime version, which is a real
tearjerker.

So, DOES the 1992 version have the original ending?

That's an understatement! The original Little Mermaid has probably the
saddest ending of any fairy tale.

Andersen's version IS the original. He created the story.

This is the weirdest discussion. People keep thinking they're saying
something new, and all the original poster asked about was a particular
movie version.

At least nobody's shouting yet, but there's a lot of talking at cross
purposes going on.

Not according to the Wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Mermaid_(1992_film)
(I assume this is the version you're talking about?)

And for anyone who would like to see the PROPER cover for the 1975
Richard Chamberlain version:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/6302327717/ref=dp_image_text_0/104-0263119...

This also appears on the cover of the video that includes that story
plus Oscar Wilde's "The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant."

And here's one version of three of the Tomoharu Katsumata/Tim Reid
cover (made in 1973, translated in 1978):
