As usual, the New York Times is not only the very last to clue in, but also
the least and most poorly informed.

Ok, for the longest time I had kind of wished that Pokemon would just end
already, as I felt it had long since worn out its welcome as both a show and
a franchise, but the fact that it's experiencing something of a revival now
only _after_ 4Kids gave up the license is just too precious. Fuck 4Kids.
It's possible they may someday learn from their mistakes and try to make
amends like Funimation did (and I'm more talking about One Piece than
anything else), but I'm not holding my breath.

That being said, I don't believe I've watched more than a few minutes of
Pokemon at a time this millenium, so I have to ask: is Ash Ketchum still 10
on this show? Did Pikachu ever evolve?

Two sure signs of the End of Civilization as We Know It:

1) A Spice Girls reunion tour

2) A Pokemon revival

Having said that...

I saw the "Lucario" movie on Cartoon Network a few weeks ago, and
it actually wasn't half bad (you might want to watch the original
Japanese end-credits, which features a song by Puffy Ami-Yumi:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKCFJgrGQag ).

At the same time, the film is a little troubling. Like other
Pokemon, Lucario can be forced into gladiatorial combat at the
capricious whim of his master. Unlike other Pokemon, Lucario
is a sentient being; essentially, he's a slave. Not sure if
I'm entirely comfortable with that...

The revival actually has nothing to do with the departure of 4Kids, and
everything to do with the release of Diamond and Pearl, the first
DS-generation games, and the first Pokemon games to feature global online
trading and battling.

And 4Kids didn't "give up" the license. They had it pulled from them by The
Pokemon Company.

Errr, ALL Pokemon are sentient. Just because they don't all have the
capacity for human speech or telepathy does not mean they are not sentient.

Don't joke about it! They are making noises...

No, not those kind of noises! ^^;

I really hope not. There are very few of these damn collectable series
that I have any time for (I didn't mind Digimon or Monster Rancher, but
even they had their flaws and, whatever you do, DON'T get me started on
Yu-Gi-Bloody-Oh!)

Meowth's ability for speech is one he learned. Technically, any pokemon
could learn to speak but they would...
