Bah! My public. How they roast me.
It was a high B-minus, Dr. Lara. An 82 out of 100. 3 stars out of
4. Surely that's high praise from a curmudgeon such as myself! I'll
upgrade it to a low-B (83%%), if it'll clarify things. I don't give
out hybrid B-/B grades anymore :-)
Don't forget the original post I made:
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.anime.misc/msg/396ab9d4d76d40be
How the film was "only a partial success", since "the situations seem
to be more important than the people
experiencing them", and so on.
Elsewhere, I noted my "morning after" opinions on the film drifting
from "a noisy mess" to "delightfully daffy".
The film's a big deal, given the tone of the animated competition in
theaters now (Meet the Robinsons, Shrek 3, TMNT and Aqua Teen Hunger
Force in some theaters). I'm a demanding cur, so I can't oversell
Paprika. I'm an observant and fair cur, so I can't ignore its
achievements. The big wigs in the animation secular media are
noticing it in ways that they didn't notice, say, Renessaince.
Cartoon freaks like me who saw and liked the film have to talk it up.
It's the least we can do.
It's no Spirited Away, but what is? :-)
