And it makes the overreactions seem even sadder :-)

I didn't even know what these profiles were until I read the thread,
and their utitlity seems best suited to household accounts with
multiple user wish lists. Beyond that, I'm not sure what the major
changes are. "Anime-only" profiles seem strange, given that "anime &
animation" is its own Netflix category. And I thought that reviews
were based on usernames.

As for the "very long wait" concerns, I can only say that it varies by
title. Deathnote: Volume 1 was a "very long wait" for several weeks,
then it was suddenly available the next day, which I how I saw it. Of
course, I usually avoid demanding new releases right away, for that
very reason. I don't wanna fight with impatient kiddies :-)

I have 4 profiles. One for anime/animation, one for films before 1977, one
for BluRay, and one for post 1997 films.

What do you got against films released between 1977-1997?

Laters. =)

That's what I find sad; using it for new releases of blockbusters
that will be in the local rental store of every small town, when
it (seems to me) to be built to have those releases the local
store would never buy because only two people in town would rent
it, where the mail version can rent it to two people in each town
across the US.

Well, I've been meaning to cut back on the caffeine at work, as I
seem to be building up an immunity to it...

Hey! If it saves me an impulsive, "gee, the only way to see
_this_ is to buy the DVD" purchase every other month, it'll pay
for itself.

Guess our current Netflix bashing can stand down--

Latest e-mails from NF, as of 6/30:
---
We Are Keeping Netflix Profiles

Dear [...],

You spoke, and we listened. We are keeping Profiles. Thank you for all
the calls and emails telling us how important Profiles are.

We are sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused. We hope the next
time you hear from us we will delight, and not disappoint, you.
---

(Now, don't you all feel rather silly?--
Guess we'll all have to go back to nebulously undefined "Throttling"
witch-hunts, the next time we want to have something about NF to pick on.)

Why? If people hadn't gotten upset over its removal, they wouldn't have
decided to keep it.

Um, ya. That was the point of complaining.

Personally, I feel used. If Netflix wanted to do a focus group, do a
focus group. Don't send out these ridiculous and poorly thought out
messages about dropping entire features and then try to candy-coat it by
saying "we're improving our service."

Unfortunately, the boards have gone from "I'm going to leave" to "Gee.
Thanks, I'll be a member for life." That's equally BS.

The decision to drop profiles was clearly intended to help the company
decrease its costs and increase its revenues. They had to know that such
a brash announcement would cause people to leave - and they were obviously
OK with that until they realized they underestimated how many members
they'd lose.
