I'm warning you back...in October!
PS I don't think these are usenet groups you placed in follow-ups so I
restored most of the crossposting to let everybody understand you are a
crossposting whiny thing!

Heh, it didn't surprise me this was happening. Probably the reason why
my folks just switched their phone service to one offered by our local
cable TV operator.

I think they will regret that at the next power failure.

Yup. My cable company is advertising packages that, I think,
include TV, internet, and phone; I'm not sure because I don't
understand ads these days. One of the supposedly carrot lines
is, "...and *SAVE* over $500!" For me to save $500 implies that
I'm spending thousands. How in the hell can these three things
cost thousands of dollars? This is a small mystery on my list.

I do realize that my patterns are a bit out of the norm, since I have
*two* broadband connections, but having reliable internet is
sine-qua-non for "income", so I have two - in case one goes down, I
can swing to the backup.
Even if I ditched either the cable broadband OR the DSL, I'd still be
at $1800 a year.
