There's a difference between author's rights and respecting the author's
vision. If Anno wanted to do something that wasn't what the author wanted
to do, then he could write his own series and not called it Kare Kano. It's
ok to depart somewhat from the manga or light novels. And sometimes it even
turns out better. But when you depart so much that the author objects, you
might be missing the point of the series. And if you have that little
regard for the series, why did you want it in the first place?
