WALL-E could have just as easily been EVE, about the fembot who meets a
quirky bot and learns to change her directives, but no.
KUNG FU PANDA could have been about a female panda, but no, in fact, out of
10 major speaking roles, only one was female.
RATATOUIE, could have been about a female rat.
CARS, male lead.
SHREK, male lead.
ANTZ, male lead.
OVER THE HEDGE, OPEN SEASON, FINDING NEMO, TOY STORY, A BUG'S LIFE, BEE
MOVIE, MADAGASCAR, etc. the lead character is male, if not the lead two
buddy characters are male.
The closest one comes to a female lead major release cgi movie is THE
INCREDIBLES, four years ago, and she was the co-lead, the wife of lead,
altho technically, it was male lead (the group is named after the male
lead). For a flat out clearly female lead cgi major movie, you gotta go back
to 2001's FINAL FANTASY.
You'd think there'd be a backlog of actresses available considering the
dearth of roles for actresses over 30, even more so over 40, and yet . . . .
What's up with that?

There's been tons of female oriented films such as Barbie and Bratz CG films
to come out, but most are direct to DVD. Hoodwinked was about Little Red
Riding Hood. Happily N'Ever After also had a female lead. And if you look at
Western animation overall, it tends to feature females as the predominate
leads. (Snow White, Cinderella, Little Mermaid, etc.) There's no shortage of
animation for girls. (Anime tends to be very mixed between boys and girls.)
Some of it is due to the market and some is due to the story itself. Nemo
just wouldn't work the same if it was about a mother looking for their lost
child. Some of it is due to market. A movie about cars is designed to appeal
to boys so it needs a male lead. And girls will see a movie with a male lead
but few boys care see a movie with a female lead, mostly because they tend
to be romances.
Some of it is simply due to the nature of the technology and who has been
producing it. Most of the CG we've seen has been by Dreamworks and Pixar.
Don't forget, it's only in the past couple years that there's been an
explosion in CG animation. As the industry matures there's sure to be more
of a mix.

For that sort of clearly flat out female, it's Hardcore Cartoons.
Wish there were more big-assed muscled women -- instead of teeny
boppers. Slim pickins from a coyly dumbed-down and affected
representative of adolescent wish fulfillment fantasy models. Where
Japs excel for an even mix of female roleplayers, that is what of and
if at all you can stomach of the lineup. Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
is reputed better, expect a little look/see, although I wouldn't see
the point against "occasionally" watching an episode of Cowboy Bebop
-- nothing much left from everything else I've trashed. Fe fie fo fum
ho hum.

Actually, the female characters that I've seen lately have been
intelligent and well-written even if they weren't always the leads.
Daria Morgendorffer, Jane Lane, Juniper Lee, Atomic Betty, Kim Possible,
She-Go - if they weren't openly sarcastic, they were strong-willed and
resourceful...quite a change from the old days. ^_^
And I like to think that the female characters of 6Teen are on relatively
equal footing with the male characters. (even if the series is too silly,
at times, for its own good) ^_^
Still, if films like 'Is it Fall/College Yet?' or 'Sitch in Time' aren't
tickling your fancy, perhaps you could get the ball rolling, so to
speak...
--------
What type of character do you want as the lead?
a cheerleader?
a bookworm?
a working woman looking for a break from the grind?
--------
What type of clothing do you want her to wear?

Well, yes, if we were talking about live-action movies... 0_o?
Derek Janssen (I hear some of them use female leads)

One reason I didn't care for the Silent Hill movie, as the change from
focusing on the father to making the lead the mother made it like every
other horror movie...
