SEOUL, July 23 (UPI) -- South Korea is struggling to win the safe
release of 23 citizens taken hostage in Afghanistan, with the deadline
set by Taliban insurgents to start killing them just hours away.

Government officials here cautiously expressed hope of an early return
of the hostages, saying the kidnappers have shown their intention to
resolve the issue via negotiations by extending the deadline for their
demands to be met.

But concerns are mounting that the release may be delayed because the
kidnappers have changed their demands -- from troop pullout to Taliban
prison release to direct talks -- which could further complicate
negotiations.
