Sonya Jones, author of an opinion column in Friday’s Columbian, was
less charitable. “Teachers unions exist to employ teachers,” wrote the
director of the Labor Policy Center at Evergreen Freedom Foundation in
Olympia. She declared the grant was “sacrificed because the union
stranglehold will not allow it.”
There’s no question schools and students lost a prime opportunity.
Instead of taking a defensive posture, union leaders ought to consider
students’ needs, and install exemptions for ad hoc projects.
Scott Keeney of Vancouver, president and CEO of nLight Photonics, also
is distressed. Keeney is chairman of the board and founder of MAPS.
MAPS would have administered the NMSI grant with Bill Fromhold as MAPS
executive director. Marcia would have joined in supervising the grant.
Six other states (Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Kentucky,
Massachusetts and Virginia) have received and accepted identical
grants.
