ACTA - another threat to citizen freedoms

Author: Peter
Date: Jul 11, 2008 21:28

ACTA is a secret [1] international deal being negotiated. MED has quietly
[2] invited submissions, so now's the time to speak up for our rights.[3]
Submissions due with MED by Monday 14 July 2008.

This ACTA deal came to light a while back with proposals that border control
could confiscate any device (ipod, laptop, memory stick) carrying material
which you could not prove lawful possession of. (That is, if you didn't
have the original CDs for the music on your mp3 player, they take it.)

There are some other concerns, such as making ISPs responsible for the
content of what you download. This would entail additional cost for them,
and guess who ultimately gets to pay for this? And in many cases, the only
way for ISPs to prevent infringing material passing through their system
would be to block all encrypted traffic, many data types (like bittorrent)
and sites (like youtube).

i'm having major problems with the latest firefox (2.0.0.15), basically
half the pages i view reload after 2 or 3 seconds, and if i switch tabs
and come back to that tab they'll reload again. needless to say this is
fricken annoying and makes firefox unusable. IE is not doing it.... i
don't want to go back to IE but....

i'm using X64, i have the latest AVG anti-virus + firewall, could this
be doing it...? if so how come it doesn't affect IE...?

any info apprec.

  Consumer web site

Author: peterwn

www.consumer.org.nz was infected by a worm last weekend and it could
have infected others. They pulled the site and replaced it with a
temporary site pending security checks etc.

I suppose they were running Windows on the web server, or it was a
very skilled attack.

  modem/routers

Hi,

For the last couple of years I have been using an old box p3-450 512
megs of memory with smoothwall and have had a billion adsl modem in half
bridge mode. It has been extremely reliable as obviously smoothwall can
handle anything you can throw at it.

Recently I decided that I might do away with the smoothwall box as I
thought it was a bit overkill. After reading the whirlpool forums I
decided to buy a tp-link adsl2+ modem to replace the billion and smoothwall.

The positives are.. its a lot quieter (silent), it uses a lot less
power, and it connects a lot faster, as the billion didn't handle adsl2+.

However, I am noticing a lot of connections dropped.. things like if I
am telnetted into a box or ssh'ed into a box, I go back to type
something 10 minutes later and the connection has died. I never had
this on smoothwall. Also things like MSN just disconnecting which i've
never seen before.

Is this a problem with most adsl modems? is it some timeout thing? or is
it just a crap modem dropping connections?

A RAID array is not a substitute for a backup. What happens if your
array controller goes bung and writes crap to all your disks? It does
happen.
