  Silly question about PXE Imaging

Author: Jp
Date: Jan 26, 2007 12:33

I have the latest Zen running (7.1 hotpatch 2)
I am able to utilize Pxe to image all of my machnies. Dell GX280, GX745, etc.

The problem that I do not yet understand is this.

1. Image a brand new PC. PXE Menu comes up, boot to maint mode, chose image, install, reboot.
2. O/S installs fine, everything works as billed.
(machine is not yet imported in to zenworks inventory)
PROBLEM:

3. If I try to re-image this same machine PXE will come up and state action:localboot and will not procede to the PXE menu any more.

I assume that this has to do with the transaction server.

Can someone point me to where I can make it so that the menu will always appear???
Does anyone know why this occurs..

TIA..

Dell Imaging Zen 7.1 hot patch 1

They have been testing the Zen 7.1 hot patch2 but are having tons of
problems with it screwing everything up at my agency. I have been
informed by people that they are not having a problem imaging the Dell
745's with Zen 7.1 hot patch1 anyone else know anymore about this?

  nvlnbp.sys

I am looking for the Linux version of a script that will pull the
zenimage variables into the ram disk. From what I can tell,
dinicon.exe (found in bootzen2.bin)does this from dos when you choose
Maintenance Mode from the pxe menu. What is it's equivalent in Linux
and where might I find it? It was suggested to me that nvlnbp.sys was
the file but I have not been able to locate it.

Situation: If you edit the PXE boot process to bypass the PXE menu and
boot straight to maintenance mode, the $PROXYADDR variable is not
populated. If possible, I want to populate that variable from a script
added to the initrd file.

Thanks in advance.

Another suggestion: pipe the output to a file and use the built-in joe
editor to search/scroll for information. I used this method to determine a
workstaiton model. Helped me determine some HP models (dc5100) have "HP
Compaq" listed in the BIOS, some (dc5000) have only "HP"

hwinfo --bios > /hwinfo.bios
joe /hwinfo.bios

A solution to kernel panic HP d530

Author: p_t_r_ahum

Had the kernel panic problem after applying HP2 to imaging, but i had 1
d530 that seemed to worked with hp2, while the rest didn't. After some
testing it seems to be the bios option
Advanced/Power-On Options/ACPI/USB Buffers@Top of Memory
if set to enable, everything works! At least, over here...

are there any docs anywhere on how to access the Zen imaging info thru LDAP
(or whatever) from the Linux command line for scripting?

I've got my bash script pulling out the Asset Tag property from the DMI, and
I can check that against my master list of workstations/servers on my SQL
server, so I know when I am imaging a workstation or a server, so I can pull
the right image down. I guess I could work some extra logic in there as
well...

Ahh...

Yes, imaging rules are very, umm, powerful things!

A solution might be to use an advanced image script that with some clever
bash script or a 3rd party tool to determine if the machine you are about to
image really is one you intend to, either by checking ZISD, or maybe a MAC
address lookup etc.

  New E1000 required

Author: mcu
Date: Jan 25, 2007 21:01

Hi
Have purchased 50 new computers with Intel board DG965SS with Core 2 Duo
has integrated network controller 82566DC. This controller, according to
Intel was supported in the E1000 driver of September 2006 (for Windows).

Not identified with ZDM 7.1.

Downloaded and tried from Forge a e1000.ko that was uploaded in October
2006. Copied the module as per 7.1 doco. (very uncomfortable with
Linux, although SLED 10 installed easily) but this did not identify the
controller either. References to installation procedures here refer to
linux.2 rather than initrd.

Reading submissions here I suppose I should just try Hot Patch 2. A copy
of initrd with the lates NIC drivers would be great if it were available.

Alright I seem to be having the same problem as everyone else I am
getting an error "No network Device Found. Load a network module first."
But what are the steps to fix this, I have been looking at all the other
posts but no one has explained all the necessary steps in one post there
scatered everywhere. Can someone please tell me all the necessary steps I
need to take to resolve this issue.

And what are the negatives about fixing this what problems does it cause
when you fix this. Because I am also reading that people are having
trouble imaging other machines, machines go into standby and wont turn
off.

HP2 Fixes One Problem and Creates Another - What will Novell Do?

Author: jtalen
Date: Jan 25, 2007 15:13

We are having a similar problem to that described by Shane Schlosser a week
or so ago - Kernel Panic on Intel 865GLC board with HP2. We moved from Zen
6.5 sp2 to Zen 7 sp1 with hot patch 2 in order to be able to PXE image 150
new HP 7700 desktops. The hot patch made imaging work with the 7700s but
today we discovered that it no longer works with our 90 older D530
computers. Further testing revealed that it also works OK with our 90 or so
7600 models. So....we fixed the problem with the new machines but created
one for the older ones. And like Shane, we can do the D530 image with a
boot CD from the ISO file the comes with HP2. But I don't look forward to
re-imaging 90 computers with a boot CD and a settings.txt floppy.

Can anyone advise on how to get Novell to move on this and how to find out
what they might be doing? Seems like there is a growing group of us
discovering a similar problem.
