It's application specific behaviour. Some programs like MS Word don't
simply open a file, write to it and close it. Rather they try writing to a
temp file and renaming that file after they finished. That's why saving or
modifying files from such an application in an environment with limited
rights often fails.

I wonder if maybe this is somehow related to the resource fork. Why did
you switch from AFP to CIFS in first place?

I don't know as I'm not that much of a MAC expert. It was just an idea
because I know that with AFP, the resource fork is handled natively while
with CIFS, it is just emulated.
