  newsparrot?

Two questions: what happened to the newsparrot websites, and
when I actually find a copy of the executable (via
filesearch.ru), why does it complain that the java virtual
machine cannot be found, when I have java running?
Alternatively, is there a more modern program that will do the
free newserver scanns the same way that newparrot says it will
(see http://www.newsparrot.co.uk/download.php) Thanks.

  monitoring download limits?

Author: full name
Date: Jul 19, 2008 05:40

Currently I use gravity for text news and grab-it for binary
reads, but since my ISP has removed its nntp server, I'm using
free.teranews.com. Now there is a download limit on this server
(free accounts), and I am looking for a newsreader that can
count my downloads and stop (suspend) downloads when I hit the
daily limit automatically, and then (upon reboot) resume the
next day. Is there any such thing, or add-on to existing
newsreaders that will do this?

[Xnews] Won't post followup with quoted text, or at all sometimes.

Author: Ohmster

I have to post this with slrn because it looks like Xnews just ain't
worth a dam anymore, or at least for right now, this article will not
even post. Read on..

I have been using Xnews forever and it is my newsreader of choice but I
have been using the same directory of files and unzipping the latest
test version of xnews into it when one comes along. So maybe my files
have gotten stale or corrupt or something, I just don't know. Maybe
someone here can help me.

I am saying this because Xnews is doing something rather strange and has
been doing this for quite some time now and it is very annoying.
Whenever I do a followup to a newspost, if there are a few lines of
quoted text in the followup and then I click the "Send Now" button,
Xnews will show in the bottom status bar that it is posting the article,
how much percent is done, then it says done, and then it says "waiting
on confirmation", and then it sits forever, eventually the post will say
"stopped" and the stop button will no longer be active and the Send
button will be again. I look and the post never posted to the server.

How will YOU cope?

Every once in while I let people know of this forum, where real people, like you and me,

Nor do any of the Linux newsreaders...

No. Agent was re-written several years ago in wxWindows (which changed
its name to wxWidgets). It will now be much easer to port it to other
operating systems if / when Forte decides to do so.

What kind of encoding problems, Eduardo? Might they be because you're
using a five-year-old version of Xnews?
