I'm involved in a civil lawsuit with a doctor. There's currently an
issue concerning when the patient died. The doctor's patient record
suggests the patient died on a Saturday while I'm claiming the patient
died the day before, on a Friday.
Interestingly, after the patient died I had sent out several emails,
one was sent to a hotmail address. The receipient also replied the
same (Fri)day.
I realise email is susceptible to forgery, however I'm wondering to
what extent one can or cannot alter email headers for hotmail
messages. I'm under the impression that the received email doesn't
allow modification of the email headers, at least not within Hotmail.
One could send a forged message to a hotmail account with wrong/forged
headers/dates, however that wouldn't change the envelope headers which
would be timestamped by the MTA's. Even if one forged the envelope
headers, additional (valid) timestamps (Received-from:) headers would
be added by the involved MTA's.
Thus, although email may be susceptible to forgery, I'm trying to
discern what can be determined to be indisputably valid from what can
be easiliy forged.
