Do bear in mind FidoNet was a non-commercial AMATEUR email and
distributed-messaging (EchoMail) network, run by a people of
widely-differing degrees of competence and on widely-differing degrees of
hardware all the way from 4.77 XTs to multiprocessor 486s. over dialup
modems which weren't "Data Center" grade over usually standard voice-grade
dialup lines with lowest-cost mail routing.
I think it was pretty darn good until the infighting over who was going to
run the network and how the escalating long distance charges and
increasing star-server costs were to be recovered. For the backbone
Echomail stars/hubs, by 1992, EchoMail volume was exceeding the
capabilities of MS-DOS based software amd equipment and necessitating
full-blown "network operating systems" and server-grade hardware to match.

Do you keep up on the news?
It is currently the explicit view of the US government (as expressed in
legal filings) that they can unilaterally imprison anyone they can get
their hands on, indefinitely, without any sort of judicial review. This
government has been appointing judges for the past 6 years and mostly
getting them seated.
Given the banality of evil exhibited by the current US government and
their cronies it seems inevitable that a ROKSO listee has the right
connections to have Spamhaus declared a terrorist organization.

Almost as intelligent, but still without the amoeba's personality.

Well, I hope you are one of those americans who get upset about Canadians
sewing Maple Leaf flags on their luggage or clothing, as part of a systematic
conspiracy to identify ourselves as Canadians.
http://www.flagwire.com/index.php?doc=28&aid=486
http://www.mrflag.com/index.php?doc=17&aid=486
"Some participants expressed a certain amount of annoyance at what is
perceived as a systematic attempt by Canadians to make the statement
that they are not Americans by sporting the maple leaf,"
...
"What bugs me about Canadians, if I may, is that they wear that damn
patch on their bags, the Canadian flag patch. That way, they
differentiate themselves from us."

It's like watching an episode of COPS, where the shirtless guy in handcuffs
explains that no *this* car isn't his, he thought they meant the other car,
this car was, ummm, like loaned to him by the sister of a dude named, um,
Tim, um, Bonneville, yeah, Tim Bonneville, met the dude in a bar, so like he
could go by this other dude's place to pick up a package but he doesn't know
what's in the package 'cause Jim's sister asked him for the favor and no he
doesn't have any I.D. on him and his date of birth is June fooourteenth,
nineteen s
--eighty-two and he lives over on Elm Street, sorry he meant
Maple, and why don't you cops go hassle Jim, err Tim's sister dude she's the
one that knows about the dope, errr, whatever is in the package.

And the reason that I try to hide that I am an American when I travel

I know of no reason why you should be!
I erred badly if _I_ made you feel that way.
