RESULT
misc.news.internet.announce will be removed

The Last Call for Comments (LCC) on 11 Dec 2006 initiated a five-day
period for final comments. Following the comment period, the Big-8
Management board has decided by consensus to remove the newsgroup
misc.news.internet.announce.

This group will be removed on 15 Jan 2007.

RATIONALE: remove misc.news.internet.announce

The newsgroup has not had any approvals since September 1997. The
group was active for less than 2 years (November 1995 to September
1997). There were roughly 80%%%% fewer approvals in the last 12 months
than in the first 12 months.

It is unlikely that a revival as a moderated group could fulfill its
charter as a source of information for the conventional media about
the Internet.

The removal of misc.news.internet.announce would have NO effect on
misc.news.internet.discuss.

Aah, my mistake, I just hadn't seen that particular form of
NewsAgent attack before, and I've filtered Bloxy enough that I never
thought to check on his address.

  [usenet] New form of attack - forgery/reposting

Author: Tim Skirvin
Date: Nov 26, 2006 20:56

There's a new form of attack going on in news.groups right now.
It's a form of flood, with what appears to be word-shuffling amongst posts
in a given thread. The user names are forged, the path is pre-loaded (so
I can't see most of the forgeries based on my own posts), and the messages
are crossposted to a variety of news.admin.*-style groups.

A few sample posts:

<5oj5at$4at$4@sneakemail.com>
<760518FE.10468E3D@39.146.233.153>
127.0.0.7>
<421601254704854848801432253@77.23.2.40>

Thoughts? It looks like it's coming from a hacked PC, so
complaining to admins isn't going to do much good, but I still figured I'd
mention it for those that are interested.

news.admin.net-abuse.policy (NANAP) is a newsgroup for discussion of
policy regarding abuse of shared networks, or 'net-abuse'. It is a
robo-moderated forum, controlled by a moderation 'bot that automatically
approves anything that it thinks is an on-topic post.

HOW TO POST
===========

(This section assumes that you already know how to post to Usenet
newsgroups in general.)

As NANAP is a robomoderated forum, all messages must pass through the
moderation bot before they hit the network. Things that must be true for
the message to be approved:

Have you done that Google search on [ "abuse of the net" "abuse on the net" ]
yet? Learn anything?

<http://www.google.com/search?q=\"abuse+of+the+net\"+\"abuse+on+the+net">
>He continues to spam the groups

Look up a few definitions of "spam" while you are at it.
>I have tried everything possible to get him to change his ways

No you haven't. Here is something that you have never tried:

THE STANDARD ADVICE:

"There is a way to influence what gets discussed in a newsgroup that
works well, and another way that has never worked no matter how many
people have tried it.

"What works: Post articles on the topic you wish to see discussed
and participate in the resulting discussion. Use killfiles and
filters so that you don't see the articles that you dislike.
If you don't know how to use a killfile, use good old fashioned
discipline and don't read posts by people who post articles that
you dislike. Never, ever respond to articles that you dislike.

Something you managed to forget, is you like to unmunge peoples email
address so it can be harvested, you do this *all the time*
