Thunderbird being messed up with each update?

Hello everyone,

I've been a quite happy user of thunderbird for at least 2 years now,
however lately some bugs when reading news have started to annoy me.
Mainly the "view threads with unread" seemed to cause problems at some
point (can't remember and thus not reproduce right now) in that unread
posts would "dissapear" and only be displayed again when you switch to a
different news/mail-folder and back again.

However, this is not the reason for my post here. Is it just me, or is
Thunderbird's behaviour with regards to the appearance (*) and display
of newsgroups (**) being changed with almost every single update, and to
the worse?
(*) toolbars - I can not get the status toolbar to display fully because
it won't fit next to the Mail Toolbar, and won't allow to be
customize-positioned below it
(**) Most recent thing: I cannot collapse partial threads anymore, it's
just "read the whole fucking thing, or else..."

Are you saying you can still partially collapse threads in newsgroups? I
am using v 2.0.0.12

As for the weird display - I've had it on both my client at work and at
home, in all newsgroups - I guess deleting the newsgroup file won't
really help ;)

Thanks anyways!

Now that's interesting... I don't recall every having been able to
partially collapse an individual thread. There have been MANY
looooooooong threads that I would have loved to do that too, since I
only followed one or two "sub"threads.

Is this an option one can turn on somewhere?

not that I'm aware of, but then someone may have come out
with an extension/addon for it. I don't know.

Hmm - not really - I could swear this is the behaviour that it used to
be until just a couple of days ago on my system here. I might be wrong
and mixing up things with the way outlook express worked, since I am
getting old ;) But I find it odd that this would've only occured to me
some days ago for the first time. Anyways - I never used an option for
such a behaviour, it was either there until recently, or my memory is
flawed and I'll apply for Alzheimer support - but then I'll probably
forget about this before this posting is on the newsserver ;)

One more example of the "messups" I am complaining about:

This is the news threaded view that I was used to:
http://www.ingo-renner.com/fileadmin/images/thunderbird.png
(sorry for not having better quality, since Thunderbird doesn't give
ahead of time warnings that the layout is gonna change drastically, I
never got to make a screenshot of that UI myself).
What should be visible there, is that the threaded view has no dotted
lines marking the thread flow, and the column order is:
Thread (OP), Attachment, Subject (Betreff), Read Status, Sender, Tag, Date

Now since the last update that got me to post here, my Thunderbird is
looking like this:
http://uffmann.name/thunderbirdNew.png

As you can see, there's now the dotted gray lines, along with "replied"
icons, and the column order has changed to
Thread (OP), Attachment, Read Status(!), Subject, Sender, Junk Status, Date

I know I can reorder columns, just giving an example of unwanted,
unasked for UI changes, which make me consider finding a different
newsreader (though from considering to stop using Outlook Express to
actually doing it took me a couple of years).

Okay, I just found an almost prime example for my main issue with
Thunderbird recently:
http://uffmann.name/thunderbirdMessingUp.png

On the right, I have displayed (from top to bottom) the headers of the
source code for the "original post", as well as the first and second
"reply". As you can easily see, those "replies" do not contain any
reference to the "original post", actually not to ANY other post. So why
the heck does Thunderbird mess this up so badly, and displays it as a
"thread"? Just because the subject line is identical? That's just stupid...

And I swear it didn't always do this mess...

Any answers welcome, especially those saying "it's a bug and being fixed
in the next version" ;) In case anyone read about that somewhere else.

Best Regards,

Lars

I believe you can turn it off for new messages: open Config Editor and
change either the mail.thread_without_re or mail.strict_threading
preference (sorry I forget which). For existing messages you can go into
folder preferences and rebuild the summary file which will rethread the
messages according to your new preferences.
