Thunderbird adds groups.

I am running Thunderbird 2.0.0.16. It's my only Usenet tool. I have
used previous versions for years without any complaint. Recently the
program functions OK on the 16 newsgroups that I have subscribed to but
every time I log on it checks for other groups that I have not
subscribed to. For example today it will check 143 news groups for new
messages and tomorrow it will check 151 news groups without any input
from me.

I am not an IT genius, I am a product of an Arts faculty. I can't find
what these new groups are from within the Thunderbird program on the
hard drive but every day they grow by 3-6. I have an up to date current
Kaspersky security program and that seems perfectly happy with the way
things are. The e-mail function works as well as it's ever done.

I did try a new install and that did SFA to the problem.

Any of you technocrats got a cunning stunt or brilliant idea?

Nestor.
