This is getting ridiculous...

Today, I saw a guy jogging down the street, holding his cellphone to his
ear and carrying on a conversation with somebody.

Why don't these people just go ahead and get it over with and find a
surgeon who will surgically implant the dang thing in their head?

I'll bet he's healthier than if he'd been sitting on his ass talking on
the phone. That said, Bluetooth is a wonderful thing...next best thing
to an earbud graft...one button-push to the headset to answer, initiate
or terminate a call, as long as you have voice dialing set up. I'd like
to get a smaller one so that I don't look so much like Lt. Uhuru on the
bridge of the Enterprise (actually not much chance of mistaking me for
Nichelle Nichols ).

I'll *call* your jogger and raise you one guy driving an 18-wheeler
holding his cellphone to his ear with one hand while with the other
hand making a very tight turn in heavy four lane traffic from 431 onto
41 in Springfield yesterday.

I increasingly find such behavior boring, aside from my assuming such
folks are idiots. (My most recent contender for a Darwin award was of
a guy on a *motorcycle* on the interstate chatting on his cell.)

Regardless of whether or not someone is using an ear bud or not, the
data is coming in (from orthopaedic surgeons, ER docs, etc.) that
folks (including walkers, joggers, bicyclists, etc.) are being injured
while using their cell phone because they are distracted and not
paying close enough attention to what they're doing and they trip,
fall, etc.

It's as if people are so amazed by the "magic" of the technology, they
become slaves to it. There's a price to pay.

oh no, the cellphone (like the gub) is not a talisman! It doesn't
demand its own use! How silly to think so.

In a prelim bout at the fights tonight the referee had to make the
boxers wait when the bell rang for the second round because one of the
cornermen had left his cell phone lying on the mat in the corner.

As usual, Jak responds to one of my posts, adds nothing to topic as
his only motive seems to be to put me down.

(One of these days I'm going to post under a pseudonym to prove my
point Jak, and I'll be sure to let everyone know when that happens.)

Anyway, go for the ad hominems, Jak, since it seems to charge you up
so much.

As usual, too much noise and too little signal here (not to mention
folks, like Jak, who insist on highjacking threads early on for their
own personal agendas) on one of the increasingly rare times I check
in.

Which is why I usually don't. Check in, that is. Too many of the
interesting posters have abandoned nashville.general and I can't say
that I blame them.

The observation above was based on experience. No ad hominem. I've
*had* real-time conversations with you. I'd have welcomed a distracting
cell phone call, although the conversation might have been more
interesting had I been able to get more than a word or two of my own in
edge-wise.
