They kill horses, don't they?

Horse (and dog) racing is right down there with cockfighting and dog
fighting. It is animal abuse, all the more disgusting because of the
facade of uppercrust respectability that shrouds its cruel
underbelly. Look at those *tiny* ankles, grotesque mutations.

Mix money and animals and the animals always lose.

Is the title of your post from that movie
"They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0065088/

Such a sad Depression-era movie.
I still remember the impression it made on me.

It's no consolation, but people who treat animals so badly,
probably treat others (and themselves) the same way.
There is always a price to pay.

I'd love to hear about that. I'd also like to hear about how the
mortality rates of the three sports are so *extraordinarily* similar,
or not.

From my understanding, quite a lot of dogs and horses lead quite
unfortunate lives (if they live at all) once their sporting careers
are over, hence the dog and horse rescue places. I personally wouldn't
rank them at the same level either but there is at least some
justification.

Victories in the 1986 Kentucky Derby and the 1987 Breeders' Cup
Classic figured to have earned Ferdinand a cushy retirement when his
racing days were over. Instead, his life apparently ended in a grisly
manner, in a Japanese slaughterhouse in 2002, according to the racing
industry trade magazine The Blood-Horse, which will report his death
in its issue dated July 26. It is believed that his carcass was used
to make pet food.

Imagine what happens to the losers.

If the rooster or dogs are winners they are used for breeding. (well at
least in Ashland City)

Interesting discussion this morning on "On Point." Horse racing in the
U.S. seems to operate under different animal-welfare rules than the
rest of the world.
