Washington, D.C.(AHN) - House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Rep.
Henry Waxman (D-CA) joined the growing chorus of voices over the weekend
calling on Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to cancel a Monday fundraiser with being
promoted by an associate of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Email messages from Ralph Reed soliciting funds for a McCain event in
Atlanta were first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution earlier this
month. Reed said he was part of the "McCain Victory 2008" team. He is the
former head of the Christian Coalition and a key figure in the Abramoff
lobbying scandal.
Abramoff is a Republican lobbyist and businessman accused of illegal
lobbying activities including defrauding of American Indian tribes and
making donations to several officials. He is currently serving a six-year
jail sentence for unrelated charges of conspiracy, fraud and tax evasion.
Waxman said Friday during a conference call organized by the Democratic
National Committee (DNC) that McCain's decision to enlist Reed in his
campaign was a "disappointing example of John McCain abandoning his
principles on the campaign trail," according to The Hill. He also referred
to McCain's much-touted work as chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs
Committee while the Abramoff hearings were held, "He claimed to be a
reformer. Well, reformer no more."
