I thought you guys might enjoy this little piece, written by an Austinite
I've never met. I stole the piece off a co-worker, and re-read the thing
from time to time, as well as pass it on to folks who might get a kick out
of it.
Part of this screed is true. Most of it is undoubtably unadulterated BS...
but very GOOD BS!
Yes... it's long. Save to a text file and read at your leisure. Comment if
you care to.
Squirrel-a-Whirl Massacree
(By: J.C. Graham)
Dear Dave,
Sorry I've been out-of-touch, Old Buddy, but we haven't had power these past
few weeks, ever since the unfortunate Squirrel-A-Whirl Incident (which
shortly I'll recount to you), so of course e-mail has been out of the
question. Truth be told, the computer system has been up again since last
Monday, but I've been so preoccupied coping with the chaos in the backyard,
and our home's wiring system, that this is the first chance I've gotten a
chance to write you a note explaining what's been going on with us. I think
that you'll agree that the course to our mishaps began innocently enough.

I started to forward it to my sister, but it occured to me
that she'd probably reply with something along the lines of
"sounds like something you'd do".

There are a lot of people in the Austin area still living on the grid
but doing a regular dance between generation of more than consumption on
some months. I have a fellow LMT/Trager® practitioner friend whose SO
has built a straw bale house on the lake and has a solar panel setup
subsidized by the city of Austin. Straw bale construction makes for a
really good insulating solution for both heat/cold and sound. It's
really very interesting. Keith told me that it cost as much per square
foot to build as traditional stick frame construction but they have
never paid more than $50 during the worst month for electricity in a
totally electric house. There are lots of other alternative construction
methods being used here as well....like Rastra etc.
