No shit. The Chicks single and album really didn't belong in the top
twenty, and that's being generous. They can play, but are in no way
extraordinary.
"Crazy" is the song of the year if you ask just about anyone that
keeps up with pop. It's just a perfect R&B classic. The Gnarls Barkely
album, "St. Elsewhere", is amazing as well. Even the most die hard "I
don't like THAT kind of music" person can easily be seduced by it.
Come on, they both cover the Violent Femmes AND sing a song about the
Boogie Man! That's the business!
My top records for 2006, and there are likely many many more better,
that I didn't hear are (in no order 'cept for Neko's album being a
sure #1):
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
Tom Waits -Orphans
Cat Power - The Greatest
Goldfrapp - Supernature (2005, but I missed it then)
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan's Ballad of the Broken Seas
Hank III's Straight to Hell
Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat
Solomon Burke - Nashville
The Black Keys - Magic Potion
Bob Dylan - Modern Times
>thought sweeping the country side of things was enough to . . .
I could have lived with that. The Chicks arguably made the best mass
market country album. The production and playing are damn good, that
can't be argued.
The single, however, ain't "song of the year" material at all.

Sticking it up the Man's ass would have involved Neko Case or Hank III
getting the country Grammy.
The Chicks can play--they're talented as all get out, but come'on--all
they did was quip less than a dozen words about the preznut being from
Texas. It was unremarkable. The 'wingers reaction was what was
remarkable. The Chicks then exploited that outrage with this record to
gain success--it's not like they'd have a hard time crossing over in
the first place, they could have gone mainstream pop years ago.
I'd have been more impressed if Brooks and Dunn had gone on record
claiming that Cheney eats live human babies.
