I got caught behind some guy this morning, when I was trying to make a
'Quick' stop for some essentials on the way somewhere. I don't know how
many lottery tickets he bought, or which kind...but I finally had to
return my purchases to the shelf and go without.
Isn't there a way for these retailers to expedite those transactions?
I've never bought a lottery ticket, but many times I've stood behind
folks who did. What takes so long? Is there enough revenue for the
retailer to justify pissing off their regular traffic?

I don't buy the scratch off tickets at all. Used to be a decent return on
them in Texas until the lege there decided they were giving away too much
money and put a stop to that quickly. It also put a major dent in ticket
sales. Looks like the payout here is about the same and sales are too.

We must be a lot alike. I don't think I have any problem with the
idea of other people gambling, but it arouses absolutely no interest
in me. Casinos on the other hand, I find intriguing. Not
compulsively...

Lotteries are a tax on people who don't understand probability.
As to "helping" education, well, believe that if you will.
I am philosophically opposed to lotteries for a variety of reasons,
including the "people who don't understand probability" one. But
mainly I am opposed to the governments criminalizing gambling and then
getting a monopoly on it.

But, so are most other commercial endeavors. If we all had the proverbial
nickel for the folks who never possessed the required knowledge of
probabilities in, say, starting up a business, we wouldn't require any
gambling at all.

And I have no problem with that. People do a lot of things that are,
by others' definition, a waste of good money. People also do a lot of
things that can, for some of them who do it, lead to ruination.
That's their choice.
What I do have a problem with is the government criminalizing
gambling, using the argument that it is bad for people, and then
getting a monopoly on it and making money from the same thing that is
supposed to be bad for you.

That's kind of what government does best... tell you what's bad for you,
selectively legalize it and charge out the wazoo for it.

If a post falls in nashville.general, and nobody reads it, is the poster
still an idiot?
