OT: Windows Vista, black Friday

Mother needed a new pooter, so I drove her to the place I consider
pure hell, Rivergate on Black Friday. She was slick, and managed to
get an HP 6000 series lappie that really was sold out, but they just
happened to have one for an older lady working her charms. $450 for a
dual core x64 bit machine is pretty amazing! My own purchase was more
pedestrian, a $35 Sansa Clip 2g MP3 player (brilliant little unit,
btw).

Of course I have make this Vista Unit into her little beaten down
bitch--that is my job, so says the Invisible yet Pink Sky Unicorn. But
gawddang--you'd thing MS would learn, but naw--it was just like...

Well, tell ya what, it is *fast* after my first go-through on her
lappie, after getting most of the junk uninstalled, her preferred
Firefox and OoWriter started in 2 and 3 seconds respectively--and FF
rendered media rich pages like a lush at an open bar. Likely just the
extreme horsepower.

But it's still not "intuitive". We slapped a CD in the drive tonight
with svenski film in AVI format and this Media Player infomercial
type nonsense popped up with a few icons. We clicked on the play
button and the video icon. nothing. Did a right click on the file to
"play" and it finally did--but ended up downloading Media Player
Classic to be able zoom to true full screen.

If you don't have yourself married to MS-only software, the latest
Ubuntu (Linux) Gutsy Gibbon is just spectacular. I had it on a Dell
lappie till the HDD squealed like a pig and keeled over. I'm actually
posting this from the same laptop running an older version of Ubuntu
straight from CD with the HDD removed. Worth a try, it's free, and you
can test it with the live CD:

http://www.ubuntu.com/

As far as building a bo
--these days, I wouldn't bother, just wait
until a Black Friday type event, and you can get a killer desktop unit
for under $400. Heck, leave Vista on it, and just run Ubuntu on a 2nd
drive on most sunny days--it now reads and write to NTFS partitions
like a champ.
