Nixon on Fred Thompson: "He's Dumb as Hell"
Source: http://tinyurl.com/2sd8lz
Pres. Nixon didn't want Fred Thompson as minority counsel during the
Watergate hearings because he doubted the mental capacity of the future
actor and lobbyist.
Nixon to Haldeman: "Oh shit, that kid!" Haldeman: "Well, we're stuck with him."
Thompson, then 30, was appointed counsel by his political mentor,
Tennessee Sen. Howard Baker, the top Republican on the Senate
committee. Thompson had been an assistant U.S. attorney in Nashville
and had managed Baker's re-election campaign...
Nixon was disappointed with the selection of Thompson, whom he called
"dumb as hell." Nixon did not think Thompson was skilled enough to
interrogate unfriendly witnesses and would be outsmarted by the
committee's Democratic counsel.

I am not a fan of Fred Thompson because of his Scooter Libby stand,
but I can understand how the Nixon quote might be completely off base.
I have worked for "yankees" over the years and in unguarded moments I
witnessed their contempt for southerners. They assumed because we talk
slower than they do, that we must be stupid.
I can imagine a young Fred Thompson might be perceived more like Larry
the Cable Guy than William Buckley.
Anybody else had this experience?

Yankees thinking we're dumb, because we talk slower?
A former manager, who was a yankee, considered anyone
from the south to be unable to identify good food,
completely uninformed about property values, clueless
about proper building codes, and generally dumb as a rock.

Been there. Heard that.
I recall back in the radio days, a lady from New York who opened up an
elocution class to teach Texas "bidness" folk how to speak properly when
coming to New York to "do bidness." This was, by her own words, so they
would appear less rube-like in dealings with the sophisticates of New York
City.

I've flown around the world in a plane
I've settled revolutions in Spain
The North Pole I have charted, but I can't get
started with you
Around the golf course I'm under par
And all the movies want me to star
I want a house, a show place, but I can't get no
place with you
