In the spring of 2005, Davidson county began requiring
emissions testing of diesel cars and light trucks. At the
time, I thought it was one of the more idiotic changes in
government regulations, most likely based on complete
ignorance of engines and the differences in their emissions.
I renewed the plates on my VW diesel, less than a month before
the change, so I wasn't expecting to deal with the emisions
until spring 2006. As they say, 'stuff happens', and I went
through emissions testing earlier than expected, but in one
of those smelly gas burners. I had hoped to get the Jetta
diesel on the road in 2006, but (again, 'stuff happens') it's
still a few items away from being ready for the road.
Sunday night, I was looking through craigslist, when I came
across something that looked like a bargain that was too
good to pass up. Turned out to be definitely in the 'fixer
upper' category, but I thought it wouldn't take much to
bring it up to the 'old trusty work truck' level, so...

Frankly, the more I learn about how Metro Government works, the more
amazed I am that it doesn't collapse under its own weight.

The Jetta (diesel) has an oil change interval of 10,000 miles, OEM
filters are $6 online and, rather nicely, are replaced in a cup at the
top of the engine.

Apparently they are also stockpiling heating oil which cuts into
diesel production and hence pushes the price up.

With synthetic oil, if I'm not mistaken.
