NBC stated that the knifeman also injured the "guard" that was escorting
the couple.
As I recall, some countries already have a "knife" ban. I think Australia
has a ban on swords, and allows such things as machetes only if the
owner can show a practical need for having one.

To be a bit picky, the article stated that their tour guide was injured.
When NBC stated that the person was a "guard", I suspected that
it was a translation error and that the person was actually a guide that
had been assigned to them.
Another interesting thing about the article is that it listed some recent
crimes that involved foreigners as victims, then stated:

While boarding a plane in Newark (remember People's Express) in the early
80's, the carry on baggage screener asked me if there was a knife in my
briefcase. After a quick check of my pockets, I said "I certainly hope so."
We opened the brief case and the screener showed my Swiss army pocket knife
to her partner / boss who walled her eyes like "you moron" and away I went
on my merry way. Those were the good old days.

If an anti-crime measure has to be 100%% effective, then I guess we'd
better fire the Metro Police. (all of them) Shut down ADT Security and
the Master Lock Co.; buying their products/services doesn't seem to be
enough to make you 100%% immune from crime...
