Woo woo--I'm part of the technorati artistocrati now! Got me one of
them newfangled HD-DVD players. If you got a 16:9 screen--go rob your
gramma and buy one. Spectacular! I've never been huge on watching
videos at home, but Best Buy is charging $200 for the basic Toshiba HD-
A3 right now, which includes 2 movies in the box, three more from the
store shelves, and five more free via a mail in form. This is only if
you purchase online for store pickup.
Heads up: the Best Buy kids will encourage you to purchase an HDMI
cable worth ten bucks, for the spectacular price of $80--but I found
using an old three headed audio/vid cable for the component analog
video, along with an analog cable to my receiver was plenty decent for
now.
I thought I'd be all serious and watch Iwo Jima or A Mighty Heart to
break the thing i
--but I caved and screened Hot Fuzz and Bourne
Identity to rot the brain. Franka Potente is HOT in HD, not 'merkin
hot, but krautastic!

Yeah, and I invested heavily in Betamax, too.
OTOH, watching Monday's storm coverage in HD on Channel 5 made the
price of the set seem like a reasonable investment!

HD-DVD ain't no Betamax. I think we're stuck for a while with two
formats. I figger $200 for a new DVD player (old one was a POS, so was
in the market), 10 movies, and the ability to "upsample" standard DVD
to look pretty good on my set is not big bucks. What did a B-max cost
in today's dollars? $3K? The picture from the HD box is unreal. I've
never been a huge renter of movies, as it's hard to get immersed in
low resolution--but with a picture that's near cinema quality, that'll
change. There's enough titles to last me days!

Not exactly. You can plug the cable directly into your set and get the
local channels in HD ('cept for one of the Sinclair sisters, but I
forget which one). Also you can scan around and get one other HD
channel, I forget which one it is.
But to get the basic cable channels that have sprouted HD channels, you
will need the box.
