George Carlin, RIP

Author: Kent Finnell
Date: Jun 23, 2008 06:49

One of my all time favorites died yesterday at age 71 of a
heart attack.

I remember seeing him live here in Nashville before my son
was born. IIRC, it was at the War Memorial Auditorium, an
ironic place for the Hippy Dippy Weatherman to perform.

He did some of his classic (or what later became classic)
bits. How we take smaller and smaller versions of our stuff
(except he used the word "shit" on stage) on our vacations.
He used Hawaii for the main trip and going to another island
in the group for a reduction of size of "our shit".

One of the briefer bits was about how we tend to keep almost
but not quite empty milk and juice cartons in the fridge,
eventually spilling it on ourselves or forgetting to get
replacements. He indicated the amount by holding his thumb
and forefinger about an 1/8th of an inch apart.

That became a unit of measure in our house. "How much milk
do we have left, Kent?" "Oh, about a half Carlin."

Yeah, really. And WTF's up with that one screen thing? Sheesh, I bet
they just ran the film over and over again and didn't even publish show
times!

All those beautiful stores. The tinkling of the chimes in the
Harvey's sidewalk overhang along Sixth.

I saw Evil jump the Canyon at the Crescent.

I always wanted one of those stopper guns with the *stupid* flags for
shooting people's cars when they do something stupid.

I want to go several magnitudes better ... a super paint
ball mortar loaded with translucent Day-Glo colors to
splatter the stupid driver's car ... no blinding the driver,
no real damage to the car, just an embarrassing array of
colors that would have to be explained to significant other,
insurance carrier, or to a curious LEO.
