His point I believe was one of being flexible in the market. That is
when people's tastes shift a company doesn't start going broke because
they aren't selling the right products.

The point of the excerise in pointing out the european product line is
that GM and Ford don't need 50 billion dollars of inflation creating
federal reserve notes to develop fuel sipping vehicles. They already
have them developed. The only thing stopping them *IS* government
regulation. (not to say the automakers didn't favor that very regulation
as a way to keep imports off the market in the US, but it's still
regulation none the less)
If I were elected dictator (and lets face it, we have a dictator more
than president now-a-days, the constitution has been pretty much
shreadded) I would simply have the regulations changed such that the US
would accept vehicles that meet ECE standards. Maybe require labeling
stating which standard a car meets, USDOT/EPA or ECE so the buyer knows
what he is getting. It would make the market much more free.
