It's been profitable. Big oil has lots of easier to get at oil. They
don't need to drill. They need to control supply. Having government lock
it up and then buying the leases on what isn't and not drilling is part
of how they do it.
I believe that Saudi Arabia has the lowest techinical extraction costs.
So long as the US taxpayer pays the bill for political climate of the
region then the oil companies can have the greater profit with the high
prices caused by, well those very military and foreign policy actions.
Want development of the vast oil resources in the americas that cost
more to extract? Pull the US military and foreign aid and other
interference out of the middle east.
