And neither of the two creeps running for President has a plan!
Drilling is a farce; alternative energy will require a great push from
a real leader. Kiss your butt goodbye!

They both share a plan of $200/bbl oil. Maybe higher. They just won't
tell people that. Look at *what* they do. look at the company they keep.

The essential problem with politics is that it concentrates on short-term
goals (getting re-elected, etc.) at the expense of longer-term goals.

Longer-term goals like balancing the budget, eliminating debt, and
alternative energy.

We could already have far more efficient cars on the road, but the auto
industry has been lobbying heavily for decades against CAFE and other sane
measures.

I'm not that flexible. Can you recommend any stretching exercises?

No surprise. If the voters keep the same jokers in Congress, both
POTUS candidates' promises of change will be BS.

Why would CAFE bring about efficiency? It's just government
interference. If people wanted to buy cars the size of the Smart car (a
little more than twice my bicycle in road volume taken up as I
encountered one while bicycling today) people would buy them. CAFE is
just pointing a gun to people's heads telling them they have to buy the
kind of vehicles government approves of. The market tends to react to
these interferences in ways government cannot predict or react to.

Since everything government touches turns to sh*t, I present the result
of their market intervention, the SUV. Like other government
interventions the results are bubbles and malinvestment. Now we see the
result of that as the market has shifted from SUVs but domestic
automakers had invested heavily in building SUVs because the CAFE
intervention and other actions such as artifically low interest rates
sent them the wrong signal.

It's far worse than what that article covers. A quick view of ford UK's
website as well as the others shows that what these companies lack is
flexibility in the US market.

It comes down to three basic reasons.

It's rather simple, european governments have not instituted any
CAFE-like standards, but found another way of directing the market where
they want it to be - 8US$ per gallon, 5 of which are taxes.

I always find it noticeable when I fill up on both sides of the
atlantic, I pay a similar amount for a similar distance driven. It's
just the car on the left side has about twice the size of fuel tank than
the one on the right.

It's not free. It's paid for by people who are threatened with prison
(taxpayers) if they don't. the services are then rationed, shortages
occur, and it has all the feeling of any government run system with the
quality to match. Plus do you really want the sort of criminals that
control the US federal government controlling your health?
