The rush to secure borders is leading in some entertaining directions.
First of all, even an American citizen really needs a US passport (now more
costly and takes longer to get because of the rush to get one) to get back
home.
From a New York Times article...
"
The new policy is a big shift after decades when Americans arrived at land
border crossings, declared they were citizens and were waved on through.
Since the authorities began ramping up enforcement in August, wait times at
border stations in Texas have often stretched to two hours or more,
discouraging visitors and shoppers and upsetting local business.
The delays could remain a fact of life across the southern border for the
next few years, border officials said, at least until new security
technology and expanded entry stations are installed and until Americans get
used to being checked and questioned like foreigners. Last year 234 million
travelers entered the United States through land border crossings from
Mexico.

Well, I'm male, white, even nominally Christian, but the only people I can
see to even be a might peeved with are the maroons who figure it's worth
nailing their fellow Americans' collective hides and livelihoods to the wall
to put the finishing touches on an "issue" that was wholly manufactured to
take minds of other, far more serious issues.
Them, and the folks who tell us this'll all help, still after test runs
showed airport security are missing 60 percent of the fake bombs, and 75%%
are being missed at LAX.
Sure makes me feel safer.
Does that count?

It has gone up over time. The current price is $97 which includes a
$12 security surcharge as of 2005. Recommended expiditing of the
passport runs another $60 which runs the price to $157. Reference:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/fees/fees_837.html
It would be very interesting as a test to see how long the run of the
mill $97 passport would take without the $60 expidition fee.
