I'd been hearing about it on the travel.usa-canada newsgroup - that gas
stations in some places are now demanding one enter their ZIP code
before you can pay at the pump.
Franklin, Kentucky is now one such place.
At multiple pumps at two different stores, it was impossible to enter my
ZIP code. I'd push a number key, and it might beep. Or it might not.
Or it might wait five seconds and *then* beep. 746 - 3771446 - 3714 -
on the third try at the first store, the hell with it. Figured it *had*
to work better at the other store across the street. I'm an excellent
touch-typist, surely I can figure out how to enter "37146" on a number pad?
Apparently not.
Gas is 16 cents a gallon cheaper in Franklin, but that doesn't do any
good if you can't get the pump turned on.

I never give my real ZIP code. And once a month my friends, and their
wives and I get together, we have a big party, singing, drinking,
dancing the rock and roll and then we all throw them in a big pile and
one by one we retrieve a new Kroger's' card.
Keep 'em guessing, that's my motto.

You can count me among those who will drive away directly, well maybe I
might tell the attendant why. I have too many credit cards to be
bullied by one of them.

I encountered this on a recent trip home from Chicago to Nashville at
some little convenience market / gas station (run by an Indian guy -
natch). I accidentally put in the wrong zip code (37204 instead of
37205) and I was instructed to "see the attendant" who then authorized
the pump. I didn't ask, but I figured the request for a zip code was a
security measure to make sure that the person pumping gas is the person
whose name is on the card.

Of course it is. But Doug's point is well taken regarding postal
codes.
