This political correctness crap is just that! Every kid goes through
moments of disappointment, when they are not the best at whatever it is the
fad is at the time. I remembered before I hit adolescence, always being the
last kid to be picked to play kickball or softball! Yes, my little feelings
were hurt from ages 9-11. However, once I hit puberty, I tried out for the
basketball team. Didn't make it when I was 12 years old. However, once I
saw what was needed in the drills for tryout, the whole next year, I
practiced all the drills necessary for you making the cut to make the team.
Also, a little more height a year later didn't hurt. I tried out again for
basketball a year later at age 13, and made the team. Now this was back in
the day before 3 point range existed, but since I played guard or forward,
that is where I tended to shoot from. By the time my Freshmen year of high
school came around, I went from not only from being the fastest long
distance runner decisively in my PE class at the beginning of the year, but
retained the titled by mere tenths of a second at the end of the year, with
a competitor in my class who worked hard all year long to beat me, and at
the end of the year he still couldn't.

Losing in the early years of childhood only inspired me to be a better
athlete and competitor. Then you are honest with yourself, and realize that
some areas you just can't compete in. I may have been good in basketball in
hitting the mark from 3 point range, but I was never going to "slam dunk" a
basketball, nor win underneath the basket on rebounds, when at 5'9 I was put
up against a 6'4 student.

I have a 5'3 sister who loves to go caving. I don't share her
interest, but as a smaller person, I can see why she enjoys caving. I also
loved to watch gymnastics, weight lifting, and ice-skating, but all the
professionals in those sports are not tall. Having a lower center of
gravity enables them to have better leverage and ability. I don't sit back
and get depressed, because I'll never be a champion gymnast, weight lifter,
or figure ice-skater. I enjoy watching the sports, enjoy watching the
people who are professional at it, and while I may enjoy participating in
any of those activities, and have from time to time, I realize my height
makes me good at basketball, and when I was younger I could have seen about
playing in basketball in college, but gave the idea up when I saw how much
time it took to be a basketball player in college, and realized as a
Religion Major, I just didn't have the time to devote the time I needed to
basketball, and I never had plans of playing professionally, even if I could
have as good 3 point shooter.
