  No packages for 4.0

Author: Dirk Heinrichs

Hi,

seems there are no binary packages available for NetBSD-4.0/Amiga. Do I have
to compile everything myself?

Bye...

Dirk

  Xamiga 16-bit

Author: Frank Wille
Date: Feb 23, 2008 09:18

Hi,

again I would like to know if anybody was using the Xamiga server with more
than 8 bit in the last four years?

I made some experiments with Xamigas from different NetBSD/amiga releases:
4.0, 3.1.1, 2.0.2, 1.6. The last one working in 16 bit is from version 1.6 !

Is anybody of the original Xamiga authors still alive and cares to have a
look?

For reproduction: you only have to start the X-server with a 16-bit
screenmode. twm is enough to reproduce the crash.

Should I create a PR for this?

Xamiga segfaults with 16 bit on CV64

Author: Frank Wille
Date: Jan 4, 2008 11:30

Hi,

either it's me having done something stupid, or the Xamiga of 4.0 no longer
supports 16 bit screen depths. This is what I did:

---8<---
frank@phoenix grfconfig /dev/grf5
1: 800x600x8 57.0kHz @ 92Hz flags: +hsync +vsync
2: 800x600x16 57.8kHz @ 90Hz flags: +hsync +vsync
3: 1024x768x8 72.8kHz @ 92Hz flags: default
4: 1024x768x16 67.2kHz @ 83Hz flags: default
5: 1152x900x8 68.9kHz @ 74Hz flags: default
6: 1152x900x16 62.1kHz @ 66Hz flags: default
Console: 640x480 (80x60) 31.2kHz @ 59Hz flags: default
frank@phoenix cat .xserverrc
X -dev /dev/grf5 -mode 2

frank@phoenix startx

  4.0 ISO

Author: Frank Wille
Date: Dec 21, 2007 10:28

Sorry, I should have reported that already with the RC-versions, but I was
busy with other projects and forgot about it. Now when finally installing 4.0,
I remembered again... :|

Some files on the 4.0 ISO image for Amiga look ugly:

- A part of the files are in upper case (e.g. INSTALLATION, COMP.TGZ,
LOADBSD_2.16, NETBSD_INSTALL.GZ, etc.). There is no real pattern in it.

- Some files have a '.' suffix, like "MD5.", "SHA512.", "XSTREAMTODEV.".

- loadbsd and rdbinfo have no executable attribute.

This doesn't make the CD unusable, but should be fixed for the next version.
IIRC the 3.1 ISO was ok.

NetBSD 4 sets optimized for specific m68k processors

Author: John Klos
Date: Dec 20, 2007 13:45

Hi, all,

I've gotten into the habit of compiling NetBSD with processor specific
optimizations for some added speed. I regularly use m68060 compiled sets
on two Amigas and m68040 compiled sets on two m68k Macs, so I'd consider
them pretty well tested. I don't have any m68030 Macs, so it'd be good to
get some feedback should anyone test these.

The optimized binaries are noticeably snappier with regards to commonly
used, CPU intensive stuff. For instance, ssh logins, at least
subjectively, feel a bit quicker than with generic sets.

If you're interested in using them, you can get them from here:

ftp://boobookitty.ziaspace.com/pub/netbsd-4/amiga-040/binary/sets/
ftp://boobookitty.ziaspace.com/pub/netbsd-4/amiga-060/...
ftp://boobookitty.ziaspace.com/pub/netbsd-4/mac68k-030/...
ftp://boobookitty.ziaspace.com/pub/netbsd-4/mac68k-040/...

(the machine hosting the files, by the way, is a colocated Quadra 605
running the '040 optimized sets; see http://boobookitty.ziaspace.com/ for
pictures)

Feedback would be most welcome.

  hard drive geometry

Author: DataZap
Date: Dec 1, 2007 15:58

Hi,

I don't know why, but I seem to have problems with setting up a 250 gig
maxtor hard drive. I think that I am going to try over again with another
drive (just to rule out the drive as the problem). I just want to make
sure that I have the hard drive geometry setup right in HDtoolbox. I can
look at the geometry of the drive that I am using with disklabel, but
without physical access, I can't look at what is in HDtoolbox.

Here is the output of the disklabel:
bytes/sector: 512
sectors/track: 128
tracks/cylinder: 63
sectors/cylinder: 8064
cylinders: 60793
total sectors: 490234752

Thanks,
Al
