looking for a server

Hi,

I have been looking for a web server. I really don't like PC. I have
always used 68k systems and powerpc. I had a few disasterous attempts to
use pcs and that was it. I wanted to find out more information about
Alpha, like how reliable they are and if I can get one in a 2U (or
smaller) that will hold at least 3 drives. I could also use a server that
has a case that is 3x18x20 or 6x9x20 (yes, that is the size the colo has
given me). I looked through the model support page and I didn't see
anything. Just thought maybe someone who really knows Alphas could tell me
better.

Thanks,
Al

Unfortunately, I think you are nearly 10 years too late.

The closest thing would have been the Alpha DS10L, which is 1U x 17.5
x 20.5, two disk drives and 2 DIMM slots. Next larger was the Alpha
DS10, which is 3U x 17.6 x 19.1, three disk drives and 4 DIMM slots.

as long as you don't run any programs that use threads, or try to burn
a CD.

The first CD burner I ever bought was for my DEC 3000/300. It burned
CDs just fine using cdrecord. That Alpha lasted longer than the CD
burner, too. :-)

Cheers,

Paul.

Pudget Sound Data Systems (www.psds.com) sold me a DS10L about two years ago
via eBay, came with a working install of OpenVMS 7 and licenses.

(not affilated with them, just a happy customer.)

Checking eBay, there seems to be plenty for buy-it-now at the moment.

Back to the original question, a 164LX in a 2 or 3U rackmount ATX case would work fine;
Just have fun flashing the BIOS :)

Great, let me know when you replace the CD burner with something that
burns DVD's and also works in the alpha. ;)

I have a SCSI CD burner, too, a good Yamaha one that I found abandoned
in my building's hallway. I brought a SCSI card to work and used a
Windows machine to update its firmware, and took it apart to blow
stray dust out of it with an air compressor. I appreciate this stuff
too, okay? but then it broke, so I plugged a modern <$100 DVD burner
into a sparc64 box where IDE is working.

srsly guys, reminiscing is great, and they are beautiful machines and
all that, but when someone asks serious questions about getting work
done we need to not reply out of our happy fantasy worlds. ``IDE is
sketchy on Alpha, and no one can agree the problem exists much less
fix it. CD's do not burn. Burning CD's works okay on sparc64.''

^^^^ This is helpful.
