I don't "hate" the kid that Smitty regards as his son, I pity him. He
hasn't learned anything from his "father" except how to be a hippie,
and that's not a particularly marketable job skill.

And if the kid was pleasant and polite around you, it's because he
ignored your chronological age and judged you by your maturity level.
He figured out that you were a kid also.
