New McCain Economic Plan: More Gas Guzzlers

Posted by Josh Dorner, Sierra Club at 6:00 PM on September 19, 2008.

McCain unveiled his most ridiculous economic plan yet.

In the midst of our ever-deepening economic crisis, John "the
fundamentals of our economy our strong" McCain unveiled his most
ridiculous economic plan yet: sell more gas guzzlers.

McCain unveiled a new ad yesterday called "Michigan Jobs." The ad is
so full of lies, deceptions, and failed approaches to our most
pressing problems, it's hard to know where to even begin. His
simple-minded pandering is an insult to the intelligence of
Michiganders (and all Americans). I'll get to the gas guzzlers bit in
a minute, but let's run through the ad's other distortions.

First, McCain trumpets his support for loans to help the auto
industry. What he doesn't tell you is that he was opposed to helping
the automakers until just last month when he looked at his standing in
the polls start to slide.

The Sierra Club knows times are tough in Michigan and supports helping
the automakers, so long as they are serious about using the loans to
retool in order to make real improvements in fleet-wide fuel economy.)

Obama and McCain's Health Care Plans: The Story Mainstream Press Won't
Tell

By Trudy Lieberman , Columbia Journalism Review. Posted September 22,
2008.

Health policy talk means little if it's not placed in the context of
real people's lives.

This is the second in a series examining how the candidates' health
care proposals will affect ordinary people and how the press could
cover that angle. Part I is archived here.

James Bell III and James Bell IV

Father and son walked into the Dr. Vesudevan Wellness Center, a Delta
Area Health Education Center jointly funded by the state of Arkansas
and the federal government. The elder James, age sixty-two, looked...

Anatomy of a Frame-up: The Shocking Case of Troy Davis

By Marlene Martin, International Socialist Review. Posted September
19, 2008.

Troy Davis faces execution on September 23rd. Will Georgia knowingly
kill an innocent man?

Since this article was written, the Georgia Board of Pardons and
Paroles denied Troy Davis clemency, giving the green light for his
execution. Go here to help stop the execution.

AUGUST 18, 2008, marked a horrible milestone for Troy Davis. Nineteen
years before, Savannah, Georgia, police officer Mark Allen McPhail was
shot and killed -- a crime for which Troy would be accused, convicted
and sent to death row.

McPhail was shot and killed in the early morning hours in a Burger
King parking lot. In short order, twenty-five fellow officers were
assigned to the case and began to scour the neighborhood for the
perpetrator. The media sensationalized the case of a 27-year-old white
father of two shot in the line of duty. One officer told a reporter,
"There is a desire among the police to have the suspect locked away
before McPhail is buried."

W's Worst Judges

By Stephanie Mencimer, Mother Jones. Posted September 17, 2008.

Forget Roberts or Alito for a minute; in eight years, Bush installed
more than 300 federal judges. Here are a few to keep a close eye on.

Over the past eight years, Bush has installed 310 federal judges --
two of them to the highest court in the land -- whose influence will
be felt for many years. Here are some to keep an eye on, along with
their more notable rulings before and after elevation.

1. WILLIAM H. PRYOR JR., 11th Circuit

Precedent: As Alabama's attorney general, he defended the state's
practice of handcuffing prison inmates to hitching posts.

Case closed: Voted to uphold an Anita Bryant-era Florida law
prohibiting gays and lesbians from adopting children -- even when
they've served as their foster parents.

2. PRISCILLA OWEN, 5th Circuit

Precedent: Considered so conservative that Alberto Gonzales, her
onetime colleague on the Texas Supreme Court, called one of her
dissents (in an abortion case) "an unconscionable act of judicial
activism."

John McCain Has a Bizarre History of Hiding Evidence About His Fellow
POWs

By Sydney H. Schanberg, The Nation Institute. Posted September 22,

McCain has worked very hard to hide from the public stunning
information about American prisoners in Vietnam who, unlike him,
didn't return home.

The $700 Billion Bailout: One More Weapon of Mass Deception

By Richard W. Behan, AlterNet. Posted September 22, 2008.

The American economy needs help, but there are other, far more
equitable ways to accomplish it.

Not since the Bush administration's lies about Iraq's "weapons of mass
destruction" have the American people been so despicably misled.

The Bush administration's proposal to buy, with taxpayers' money, $700
billion of toxic liabilities from the corporate financial titans of
Wall Street is a fraud. It is by no means necessary, as Treasury
Secretary Henry Paulson claims in the agency's Fact Sheet, "to promote
market stability, and help protect American families and the U.S.
economy."

It is necessary only to assure the financial survival of Wall Street
banks and brokerages, the administration's most loyal supporters and
its greatest political contributors -- and in large measure the cause
of the financial meltdown the country is facing.

Meltdown and Bailout: Why Our Economic System Is on the Verge of
Collapse

By Joshua Holland, AlterNet. Posted September 22, 2008.

Bush wants to fleece us for hundreds of billions in the financial
crisis, but that's just the first layer of a more fundamental economic
problem.

The immediate cause of our financial meltdown is unchecked, unbridled
greed. Mainstream newspapers and the business press are doing a fairly
good job of explaining how the lack of regulatory oversight led us
into this nightmare.

But you have to dig down one layer to find the cause of that
situation. Under cover of the ideological euphemism known as the "free
market" and with enormous cash investments over the past four decades,
business elites have captured the regulatory organs of powerful
democratic states -- nowhere more so than the United States -- and
promoted their own narrow economic agendas for short-term gain.

Sarah Palin's Creationism Will Rape the Environment

By Chip Ward, Tomdispatch.com. Posted September 22, 2008.

The Bush admin has been a nightmare for the environment -- and the
nomination of Palin is an insurance policy taken out on its
continuation.

Despite the media feeding frenzy, we still may be asking ourselves,
"Just who exactly is Sarah Palin?" Mixed in with the
Davy-Crockett-meets-SuperMom vignettes -- all those moose hunting, ice
fishing,...
