On July 15, 2007, the Cross Border Demonstration Project began to
satisfy one of the last provisions of the NAFTA treaty between the North
American countries. On that date, trucks destined with freight from one
country to the other were allowed to begin rolling across the borders
with no mileage zone restrictions.
22 Mexican based motor carriers, consisting of a total of 77 trucks, are
now registered with the FMCSA to operate within the United States. These
trucks are now actively and routinely crossing from Mexico with freight
into the United States and have access to the lower 48 states.
8 American based motor carriers, consisting of 42 trucks, are actively
operating from within the United States and are actively hauling freight
into Mexico. Two of thse carriers are not located along the border. They
are based in Illinois and Ohio.
Despite concerns that Mexican based carriers and their trucks would be
unsafe, have not been justified. An analysis of the data compiled by
SaferSystem shows that these carriers and their drivers are operating at
safer levels than their American counterparts.
