What is your experience with GMDSS in the Gulf of Mexico ? ?

I find that most of the GMDSS stations do not fully work, even though
they
have their FCC and ABS certifications. Batteries are expired,
dead, and on one
vessel (Jonathan Chouest), the GMDSS battery bank was missing.
On many vessels the antennas are broken, and some are not
even wired up.

I have witnessed "technicians" from Beier Radio, and International
Marine Systems (part of
Edison Chouest Offshore) just install the equipment, and then print
out certifications that it is
all operational, without even testing it, since they have no idea what
the equipment does anyways.
That is why I quit working for these incompetent companies, just after
several weeks.

The common practice is to just turn off all the GMDSS gear when the
vessel leaves port, to go
work in the Gulf of Mexico.
