A large chunk of religious thought - from Buddhist idea of
nonattachment to Jesus's and Paul's statements in the New
Testament - is centered around extrication of people with
spiritual sensibilities from world, and in the process
plunging the world (as well as the people with spiritual
sensibilities in the world) into darkness. The thought
especially concerns people's romantic attractions, and its
burden - that the world is evil and thus is to be
rejected or subdued - becomes a burden indeed upon everyone
who is capable of romantic passion and who, by having the
light extinguished from social universe, are denied an
opportunity to share their inner treasures or partake of
those of the next person.
That is an extremely unethical stance to take.
