Good Marginal Thinking

The heroes of church history began as reflective Christians who doubted
what
everyone else took for granted by Brian McLaren

Your skin color can make you marginal in some settings. Your level of
income or education can do it
in others. Your worship style or theological persuasion or political
party can put you at or beyond
the fringe in still others. Being, thinking, looking, or acting
different from the majority can push
you to the margins.

I'd like to speak up on behalf of a group of people in our churches who
feel different pretty often,
and therefore feel marginalized pretty often. Dan Taylor, in The Myth of
Certainty (IVP, 2000),
calls them "reflective Christians." Less sympathetic people call them
doubters.

A Russian writer stated, "In Russia, there are two kinds of people:
Smart and mean, and stupid and kind." In America, the mind and heart
can be seen arranged in two significant misdirections, and with other
more positive possibilities.

One common American misdirection is the Midwestern-style anti-
intellectual "hey-mr-smartie-pants-who-do-you-think-you-are" crowd.
These compensate for their intellectual inferiority by claiming that
someone who has a mind can't also have a heart. The other is the
emotionally repressive rationalists, reductionists, logical
positivists, behaviorists, "skeptics," eliminativists, and others who
want to deny the validity of anything intuitive or heart-involving.
These compensate for their emotional inferiority by claiming that
those who have a heart can't also have a mind. Both are in grave
error.

know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the
snowplows can get through?" With the love and understanding in his voice
that all men who are married to blondes exhibit, the husband replied,
"Why don't you Just leave it in the garage this time?"

continued to take older tourists to locations that were not too hard

The problem of psychology is how to describe a multicurved structure
such as the brain in terms of linear logic.

The dishonest psychology misrepresents the mind, either judging it for
difference from linearity or from difference from one or another
normative construct. But the honest psychology does have a chance at
it, and that is through what is known by mathematics:

That linear functions can be made to approximate curves - when taken
in infinitesily small approximations, in which the lines become
vanishingly small until they become small enough to fit the curve.

Psychology thus has a potential - by doing just that.

At which point linear logic becomes advanced enough to be curved, and
the scientific and the poetic merge into one.

Which transforms the understanding of logic as much as it enhances it,
as well as allowing it to actually do its job of explaining the mind.
