William Clark's long piece summarized below provides some helpful
info.
However, Peak Oil is not an "extremely important" phenomenon
because oil now can be replaced swiftly, egalitarianly and cleanly.
The bad news is not that oil is peaking but rather that it didn't peak
several decades ago.
Also he fails to understand that both "macroeconomics in its
geopolitical context" and climate change remain "essentially
unreported by the five US corporate media conglomerates".
What the public has been fed recently about climate change has
not led to "awareness" but rather to a vast underestimation of its
dangers--mainly because the emergency has been presented in the facile
linear terms of the ill-fated Occidental logical heritage, which make
its impossible for folks to grasp the significance of the various
overwhelming dynamics of Vicious Cycling.
Almost all other anthropocentric commentators make these same
large errors.

The 21st century will likely be defined by three overarching forces:
climate change, Peak Oil, and macroeconomics.
The twin issues of climate change and Peak Oil are intertwined
variables, and each represent extremely important phenomena that have
slowly gained some public awareness. However, the third issue,

In a letter written by five inmates from the Tlacolula de Matamoros
prison, addressed to Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, the accused
say that they were "deceived by human rights organizations",
and accuse Yisica Sanchez Maya of "inciting violent acts
and obliging them to support the APPO
(Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca)".
It is important to point out that these same inmates declared
in a Dec. 31, 2006 press conference, that they were forced
to sign the letter mentioned above by a group of lawyers
headed by Josi Juarez in exchange for their release from prison.
The contents of this letter constitute a serious insult to the work
being carried out by human rights organizations during the ongoing
conflict in Oaxaca, and particularly against the Oaxacan branch
of the Mexican League for the Defense of Human Rights,
and its president Yisica Sanchez Maya.
The accusations contained in the letter, aside from being false
and hurtful, put at serious risk the work being done by civil society
to defend human rights in Oaxaca, and create a climate of hostility
and of threats, while attempting to legitimize violent acts
carried out by the State against this important sector.
In light of the current political conflict that Oaxaca is going through,
this letter is an ominous and perverse sign that adds to the confusion
here, particularly of the people who've been most severely damaged
by the crisis: those unfairly and arbitrarily detained during the serious
events of the past November 25. In addition, the letter reflects
a strategy to divide the popular social movement, of discrediting,
slandering and intimidation of organizations that defend human rights
- particularly taking into account the previous harassment and
threats already documented during the Oaxacan conflict.
We reiterate that the role of LIMEDDH and other human rights
organizations contributes to improving social and economic conditions,
reducing social and political tensions, and creating a peaceful
environment at a national as well as international level
for the respect of human rights.
The respect of human rights in a democratic state depend, to a
large degree, on effective and adequate protection of the same
rights of those whom are defending the human rights of others.
For that reason, we declare the following:
a) We openly support the serious and responsible work
of the Mexican League for the Defense of Human Rights,
and we recognize the commitment and path of its president,
Yisica Sanchez Maya.
b) We strongly reject this campaign of slander and dirty war
launched against defenders of human rights in Oaxaca,
a campaign marked by the intolerance, impunity,
and authoritarianism that continues to exist in the state.
c) We urge the Mexican State to take all necessary measures
to guarantee the physical and psychological security of defenders
of human rights, and particularly of members
of the Oaxacan branch of LIMEDDH.
We also demand an immediate investigation - complete and impartial -
- of the acts mentioned above, in order to identify those responsible.
d) We demand that the Federal and State governments respect
the rights and fundamental liberties, and establish measures that favor
the protection of defenders of human rights - in accordance with the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Pacts
and Conventions on Human Rights that have been ratified by Mexico.
e) We call on national and international human rights organizations
to continue to monitor closely these serious events in our state.

On January 11th, 2002, twenty hooded and shackled men shuffled off a
plane from Afghanistan, arriving at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba. In an attempt to sidestep the Geneva Convention protections for
prisoners of war, the Bush administration created a new category of
"enemy combatant" for these men captured in the "war on terror."
Since that time, more than one thousand men and boys have been
imprisoned at Guantanamo. Accounts of cruel, inhuman, and degrading
treatment have been condemned by the United Nations, Human Rights
Watch and other reputable bodies. The prisoners have resorted to
hunger strikes as a way of protesting their treatment, and many have
attempted suicide; three men killed themselves on June 10, 2006. Fear
and desperation mark their confinement.
Five years later, not a single prisoner has been charged, tried or
convicted of any crime. January 11th, 2007 marks five years of unjust
imprisonment, isolation, beatings, interrogation and abuse. We say: no
more. We must say: no longer.

The purpose of torture is to discover what can break down the masses

With your help, we sent 693,556 emails and faxes urging decision
makers and corporations to make choices that protect our environment.
We also encouraged thousands of activists to vote environment on state
ballot initiatives.
Your activism has made a difference! Here are just a few of the
victories your involvement helped to achieve in 2006:
* The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge remains intact, protected
from oil and gas drilling.
* New proposals to open up all of our coastlines to more off-shore
drilling failed.
* The undermining of endangered species protection was halted.
* The gutting of state food labeling standards and toxics laws was
derailed.
* The conservation community won on five out of seven major state
ballot initiatives in four states (Arizona, California, Idaho and
Washington). SaveOurEnvironment.org helped pass a renewable energy
initiative and a land and water initiative, and helped defeat three of
the four takings initiatives.
* ExxonMobil and Congress together received more than one million
messages through the ExxposeExxon.com campaign opposing and revealing
how ExxonMobil is using its profits and power to keep America addicted
to oil.
* A major state global warming bill (AB32), that will
significantly reduce global warming pollution, was passed in
California. As a result, other states are now interested in passing
similar legislation.
SaveOurEnvironment.org also embarked on a successful project to
recruit, educate, and activate 50,000 new people from 22 states where
more online activists are needed to advocate for important
environmental issues. These activists now join you in making a
difference for the environment.
You helped make all of these victories possible.
