Is there a secret wild card character for "Cross-Reference"? (It's not
in the list of Special things in the Find-Replace dialog. As you know
if you've been following my saga, I will have hundreds of cross-
references in the form "(123)a" that will have to be changed to
"(123a)" at the last moment after they've been decoupled from their
hyperlinks; but there are a few like "(123)a-b" that will have to
change to "(123a-b)".

I can do the former by simply Find-Replacing )a , )b , )c , and )d
with a) , b) , c) , and d) , but there are likely to be other examples
of )- here and there, so I can't just search for them automatically.

And Jay just mentioned a super-secret wild card " \1 " that refers to
unspecified text found by Find! Is that correct? Backslash and not
caret? And howcome I've never found this mentioned anywhere? It could
have been quite useful over the years!

Happy New Year, y'all (California and Hawaii, you'll have yours soon).

Cannot edit in word 2007 compatibility mode

Author: JGT
Date: Dec 31, 2007 21:02

On my Vista ultimate (fresh install) PC I installed Office 2003 then I
installed and then installed Office 2007. Becasue I'm working on a network
where all the other PCs have office 2003 in Word 2007, I have configured my
default save format to "Word 97 – 2003 Document (*.doc)” . In Word 2007 I
open a word 2003 document on a network drive. At the top of the window it
states Compatibility Mode but I cannot select any text with my mouse cursor.
My intent is to update the document in Word 2007 and save it in the DOC
format thus when it is accessed by a PC that has only Word 2003 it can be
changed if necessary. Why cannot I edit the document in compatibility mode?

  Printing

I have Microsoft Office 2007 and using Windows vista. Evertime I try to print
something from Word, the message on the bottome reads, "Connecting to printer
press ESC to cancel". I have waited as long as 15 mins and nothing happens.
It shows a message at top of page "Microsoft Word is not responding". I can't
figure this out. Have a new printer! OH! I am working off of a Home Network.
Everything else works. Anybody else having this problem

Does anybody know how to find quotations/apost rather than words?

I'm writing a novel and I used apostrophes to show thought. After writing
further on, I strayed from apostrophes and simply decided to write the text
in italicized. This proved to be very troublesome upon reaching the end,
realizing that over the first half of my book has apostrophes. Can someone
help me delete and replace all of the apostrophes to just italicized
thoughts.

  page break problem in word

Author: sandypsiu
Date: Dec 31, 2007 15:03

Hello,

I'm using Word 2003. All of a sudden now, when I type and my text moves
onto the next page, Word does not insert a soft/automatic page break. At
least, it doesn't seem to. My text is obviously still registering, because
when I insert a hard/manual page break after my last word on the first page,
any subsequent typing on the second page then shows up. It's the same when I
go from the second to the third page, and so on. If I insert hard breaks,
save it, and open it, it's fine and it's all there. However, if I send the
document to someone, only the first page comes up unless that person, too,
inserts a hard page break. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Word 2007 Find and Replace Command fails

Author: EKH

When searching for text in a document, the Find and Replace command fails
after being used repeatedly to find a large number (50 or more) of phrases.
I have not noticed this problem in previous versions of Word. Any ideas as
to why this happens?

Refs & Xrefs with Hidden Text?

Author: Hans
Date: Dec 31, 2007 13:23

Background:
In a 200+ page doc, I am trying to insert captions (figures) and cite them
with cross-references. The doc will be printed double-sided and these
captions are for pages that are not native to the doc (they are AutoCAD
plots, to be added upon assembly of the doc). Each AutoCAD plot will fall
between pages in the Word doc; they are NOT numbered.

In the List of Figures, each figure's position will be identified as
"follows Page X-X," where X-X is the page in Word preceding the figure.
Therefore, each Caption needs to be inserted on page X-X in Word.

I am unable to figure out a way to create the captions, cite them with xrefs
in the text, and create a List of Figures in such a way that all numbering
remains automatic. I tried inserting them on page X-X, then making the text
Hidden, but they then do not appear in the List of Figures (nor can they be
xref'd). I cannot simply turn the text "invisible" (white) because it makes
the paragraph spacing look odd.

I also tried creating "place holder" pages, to be swapped with the figure
upon printing, but this can only be achieved by manually "forcing" the page
number on the place holder page to be the same as the prior page, and makes
the whole process nearly completely manual.

select all fields in a form

Author: Alan
Date: Dec 31, 2007 12:36

I'm using a form with fields, and what i'm wanting to do is be able to select
all of the fields at once to change font or size, without changing the whole
document. I've learned here about the format painter, but still a lot of
fields to click on, it'd be much easier to be able to select all the fields
at once, JUST the fields.

thanks a bunch!

  Supress Trailing Space in Cross-Reference

Author: David L.
Date: Dec 31, 2007 12:28

Is there a way to supress the final space in a cross reference? I have a
bookmark that has a space at the end (i.e. "This is the text ") and I'm
trying to figure out a way to have the cross reference just appear as "This
is the text" (no space at the end).

Is this possible? Thanks!
