Help with Virus "Generic PWS.y" (Trojan) and "Generic.dx" (Trojan)

Author: Jim
Date: Sep 18, 2008 19:50

I am using McAfee 2008 and it has been catching this virus or trojan
every time it scans the computer recently. It always says it repaired
the virus by removing it. However, it appears to keep coming back,
making me think that it's parked somewhere else on the laptop and is
regenerating itself somehow.

The trojan seems to park itself in the C:/System Volume
Information/-restore/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

folder.

The reason I am concerned is that today I got a call from my credit
card security center saying my card had been compromised shortly after
I placed an order online at a place called Texas Towers in PLano, TX.

Now, I don't know if it is the Trojan at fault or some slimeball thief
employee of the company. I keep no credit card information on the
computer, but did type in the credit card number and other information
when placing the order at Texas Towers. Could that Generic.PWS.y
have sent the card information somewhere or would anyone know just how
these trojans mentioned above work?

John,

By removing c:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe from registry, the problem resolved.
Thank you.

  Re: System Tray Pop-ups

I edited the registry as Galen described. It has no effect; the system tray
alerts continue to pop up, particularly the annoying one that tells me it's
conecting to the wireless network. I can usually tell whether it's
connecting by whether or not there's an "X" through the tray symbol.

  WinXP Memory of text

Author: PT
Date: Sep 12, 2008 19:09

On a number of websites, I note that WinXP has apparently memorized items
like my name, email address, phone number, and logins. But it's also
memorized some earlier misspellings.

Is there, and if so where is a file which contains these items?

Is it editable?

Does Microsoft still offer the News groups that you can read on Outlook
express. If so would some give me the NNTP server address?

update from Windows 2000 to XP

Author: horst

A friend of mine offered me a Windows XP disk with a full licence.
Will I be able to update my Windows 2000 or must I make a clean install
(giving me a lot of problems as I have a huge quantity of programs to be
reinstalled)?
Thanks
Horst
