Kinda sounds like your drivers got corrupted, possibly even your chipset.
What were you running when it died?
Try restoring your computer to an earlier time when all was good. If that
won't cure it, you may end up having to replace your MB.

I bought the LifeCam VX-5000 in the USA and brought it to the UK. However, on
loading the CD, the installation will not move past the first window because
it will not recognize the internet connection ("setup cannot continue because
you are not connected to the internet or the server is unavailable. Connect
to the internet and then run setup again"), even though the internet is
connected.
Is there any way around this?
Thanks

All of a sudden and without warning, my PC does not "see" an External HD that
I was using to back up important files. The hardware case (USB interface)
works fine with any other drive that gets plugged in.
When I try to boot up with the original drive connected, the PC will not boot.
When I try to connect the drive after boot up, the PC hangs until it is
disconnected.
Other drives were tested and work fine.
I need to recover the files if it is at all possible.
What I think happened - I have a young child at home and he might have
unplugged the USB cable when it was not "safe" to do so. Or he may have
knocked it down (24" drop) on to a carpet and slightly jarred it.
On a few occasions, the PC will "see" the device as a USB Mass Storage but
does not list the drive in the My Computer folder. Also, when accessed
through Device Manager, it does not show a driver, will hang if you try to
install a driver, etc.
Is there any way that I can save/retrieve the information without having to
spend $100's of dollars that I don't have to get it professionally repaired??
Is there any freeware/shareware that can diagnose exactly what is wrong with
it??

I read through this thread with interest, and all make some interesting and
useful points.
My experience is that even for "everyday computing", ( ...what a STUPID
expression that is btw ! ), including running several programs at once, e.g.
leaving a DVD burning away whilst carrying on doing...

Problem with Aspire 3000 using Windows XP before and after recovery from
previously valid Ghost image AND also after use of recovery disks originally
supplied by Acer:
At welcome screen and thereafter, keystrokes processed very slowly (<1 per
second) only if staying on key until recognition (leaning on key does not
eventually produce multis), touchpad motion is reflected well behind actual
motion, BUT USB mouse behaves just fine, including clicks.
All of the above does NOT occur in safe mode.
Any suggestions or solutions or additional information needed?
