  Second Alt+Ctrl+Del required after logon

Author: Roger Hunen
Date: May 31, 2008 23:39

Hi,

I have a weird problem: after I logon to Windows XP Pro I have to press
Alt+Ctrl+Del another time for the logon to complete.

I run Windows XP in Windows classic mode. To logon I press Alt+Ctrl+Del
and then enter my username and password. The logon dialog now disappears
but after 2-3 seconds there is no more disk activity and the logon seems to
hang. I then have to press Alt+Ctrl+Del again to make the logon process
continue (pressing any other key has no effect). Now the logon continues as
usual ("Loading your settings", etc.) and the desktop appears. From that
point onwards the systems functions normally.
As far as I can tell the problem happens only at the first logon after a reboot.
I have not observerd the problem after logging off and logging on again. The
problem does not occurr after every reboot (though it usually does).

I first observed the problem in late april. A few days before I had installed
the april updates via Microsoft Update (I don't use automatic updates as I
first want to review the updates before installing).

  Flash Drive Problem

Author: Novice IT Guy
Date: May 31, 2008 23:22

When I plug in my Corsair 1GB USB flash drive into both my PC &
laptop, I get the following error msg:

A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its
hub port. You should disconnect the device.

I have never had this happen before. The last thing I did was left it
in the laptop when I was downloading XP SP3 overnight.

Does this mean I lost all my data on the flash drive? If so, does
anyone recommend a good data recovery program? Can anyone help?

Thanks.

  permissions fiasco

Author: payprplayn
Date: May 31, 2008 22:36

I originally posted this on someone else's question thread, but I thought I'd
repost it on a fresh thread, so it's not 4 or 5 pages back. anyway, my
problem is with permissions in windows xp. I know I need to get to the
security tab in the properties window to edit them, and every place I look
for an answer (including the other thread) says I need to go to the view tab
in the folder options window and uncheck "Use simple file sharing."

I'm trying to do this, but I don't seem to have a "Use Simple
File Sharing" box in the view tab of my folder options box.

I wonder if it's because I messed up my permissions so thoroughly.

See, I'm running a dual boot with XP home and Vista buisiness (64-bit) and I
foolishly changed the ownership of the "Documents and Settings" folder on the
XP Drive to my Vista Profile, and now of course I can't get into my XP
profile.

I created a new account to try to change permissions back, but as I said,
the box I need to uncheck isn't even visible.

Any Ideas?

  4GB of RAM WinXP x32

Author: K2NNJ

Will having this much ram slow my system, than having it run faster?

I ask because I know I would have to have an x64 OS to recognize the full
4GB. I have a Dell XPS 400 running Windows XP MCE x32.

Thanks,

Rights problem - Even the administrator is locked out, but I don't see why

Author: Will Pittenger

I needed to lock users out of a select folder due to privacy concerns.
I know not to deny to all users and then attempt to allow in just select
users. So I locked out just the users I needed to stay out. Then I
found myself forced to reinstall Windows.

In the new installation, I tried something slightly different with that
folder. I create a group containing just the members that had to stay
out. I then denied to that group rather than to individual members.
Trouble was, somehow, it acted like I was part of that group. (I could
see the files, which others weren't supposed to be able to do, but that
was it.) I never was. I verified that I wasn't by going to the window
where it lists the effective rights for a user. I supposedly had all
rights.

Eventually, I deleted all entries and reset it by inheriting from the
parent folder. That provides full access to everyone. This, from the
point of view of what I, as user, could do, changed nothing. I still
can't open the files.

How to delete files more than 6 months old automatically?

Author: Eric
Date: May 31, 2008 21:23

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to delete files more than 6 months
old automatically? I will using Norton Ghost for backup periodically, but it
does not have any function to delete past backup files for releasing free
space. Therefore, there is a list of backup files under Drive D, and I would
like to find any file, which is older than 6 months, then delete it. does
anyone have any suggestions on how to delete files more than 6 months old
automatically?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions
Eric
