Using Hyper Terminal or Telnet with a USB instead of Serial connec

I know this is an XP discussion group, but there doesn't exist a Vista one yet.

I recently bought a new computer and it only came available with Vista. I
then learned that Vista doesn't have Hyper Terminal. Add to that, the system
I bought uses only USB connections and has NO serial cable connectors.
Therefore, even if I download a terminal type program, I still cannot connect
to the development board (Zilog Encore!) I am trying to use via serial cable.
The development board is connected to the system via an USB cable.

The question is this, does anyone have an idea how to see the data
transferred to and from via USB instead of a serial connection?

The only thing I have been able to figure out is to buy a serial connector
card and install it. The problem is that my project funding and time are
extremely limited. If anyone has a suggestion, I would love to hear it.

There are lots of USB-to-Serial adapters on the market.
I used some of them when I had to do serial debugging on target boards but only had USB port on my development stations.

For instance, FTDI (http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/EvaluationKits/USB-Serial.htm).
